The US military may let an aircraft carrier retire 20 years in advance

Foreign media said the Pentagon plans to retire a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier at least 20 years ahead of schedule, thereby reducing the size of the aircraft carrier fleet and saving billions of dollars.

The US Mission and Will website quoted the Washington Post on February 27 as saying that the US military will cancel plans for a mid-term renovation of an aircraft carrier. Sydney Friedberg, the latest US defense website, reported on the 27th that the aircraft carrier was the "Harry Truman", which was originally planned to replace fuel for its nuclear reactor core in 2024.

The "Truman" aircraft carrier, which entered service in 1998, was originally planned to serve for 50 years, as was the case with all nuclear-powered aircraft carriers of the US Navy. According to the latest defense website, in 2024, the aircraft carrier was originally expected to sail to the Newport News Shipyard for fuel replacement and composite overhaul, which is expected to be completed in 2028.

According to the report, as part of the forthcoming budget plan for 2020-2024, the mid-term overhaul of the aircraft carrier and the plan to retire it will reduce the size of the US aircraft carrier fleet from 11 to 10.

The Washington Post estimated that the total savings would be $4 billion. The decision was made to ensure that the US Navy could make a compromise with the purchase of two new Ford-class aircraft carriers as announced in January.

This is not the first time the US military has done so, and Congress is likely to veto these plans. During the Obama administration, the military had proposed to retire the "George Washington" aircraft carrier that was in service in 1992 to cut costs. In order to prevent disputes with Congress, the White House intervened and expressed willingness to increase funding. The military may use the "Truman" as a "bargaining chip" to get more budget.
